The Taste categories are based upon the commonly held mezcal groupings which define both the style and process of mezcal production. A full list of categories is below.
White spirit, which can have coloring and flavourings added to it, unaged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels
Golden – unaged white Mezcal but with a colouring agent added
Aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two months but less than 12 months. This can be done with 100% agave or mixed mezcals.
Aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months but less than three years.
Aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years
There are up to six Design categories in which an individual product can be judged, each reflecting the major product or display areas of the market. A full list of categories is below.
Mezcal of any style that would retail at a competitive price point. As a guide, this would be around £24/$45 or less for a 70/75cl bottle.
Mezcal of any style which would have a higher recommended retail price point of around £25-£45/$46-$80 for a 70/75cl bottle.
- Ultra Premium
Luxury, high-end mezcal which would have a retail value upwards of £46/$81 for a 70/75cl bottle.
- Limited Edition
This category applies to mezcal pack designs where the number produced were limited; such as a limited production mezcal, a special pack design for a special occasion, or a seasonal pack design.
- Duty Free / Travel Retail Exclusive
Presentation packaging created specifically for mezcals of any style or price for sale in the duty-free / travel retail market.
- On-Trade / Back of Bar Exclusive
A mezcal bottle / package of any size designed specifically for back of bar or on-table impact. For example, light-up bottles.
- New Launch
Packaging for a new mezcal – a new brand, a new variant or a new style – launched within the last 12 months.
- Relaunch / Redesign
A new or refreshed pack design for an existing brand, variant or flavour. A picture or sample of the previous packaging must be supplied along with a description of what changes have been made and why.
- Technical Excellence / Craftmanship
This award will go to the pack which, in the judges’ opinion, demonstrates excellence in craftsmanship in any one or more areas of execution – bottle, carton, label, closure, design embellishment.
- Design Effectiveness
Marrying the effectiveness of design and actual sales figures in association with IWSR. On entering documentation on sales figures will be requested. Clear evidence of how effective the design is needs to be shown.
